What Is the IC Line in Astrocartography?

IC in astrocartography refers to Imum Coeli, Latin for “bottom of the sky.” It is the lower intersection of the meridian and the ecliptic and sits opposite the Midheaven, or MC.

Astrodienst’s IC reference describes it as the lower or midnight point of the meridian axis.

In astrocartography, the IC commonly shifts attention toward:

Is the IC the Same as the Nadir?

Not technically.

Some astrology guides use “nadir” as informal shorthand for the bottom of the chart. Astronomically, however, the nadir is the point directly beneath the observer, while the IC is defined by the intersection of the ecliptic and the lower meridian.

Astrodienst explicitly notes that the IC should not be confused with the astronomical nadir.

This distinction does not change the IC label on your AstroCarto map, but it gives you a more accurate definition than simply calling the IC “the nadir.”

The IC Is an Angle, Not One Universal Home Line

The IC is sometimes described as “the home line,” but that description is incomplete.

IC is an angle. Every supported planet can form its own IC line:

  • The angle identifies the life area being emphasized.
  • The planet describes the type of activity, opportunity, pressure, or trade-off involved.
  • Nearby lines provide additional context.

A Venus IC line and a Saturn IC line both emphasize private foundations, but they do not carry the same themes. There is therefore no single IC line that is automatically best for everyone.

How to Use the IC Line Astrocartography Calculator

In AstroCarto, colors identify planets. They do not classify a line as automatically positive or negative.

Line styles help distinguish the angles. The product uses the labels AS for Ascendant, DS for Descendant, MC for Midheaven, and IC for Imum Coeli. Some astrology resources use AC or ASC and DC or DSC instead of AS and DS. They refer to the same two angles.

How to Read an Astrocartography IC Line for a Real City

Start with a city you already know. Familiar experience gives you something concrete to compare with the map.

After selecting it, ask:

  1. Which IC line is closest?
  2. How far is the city from that line?
  3. Is another planetary line closer or similarly strong?
  4. Are any crossing signals available?
  5. Does the interpretation match your actual experience of home, privacy, family, or stability there?
  6. Which parts do not match?

Next, check a candidate city using the same questions. This is more useful than asking whether one location is universally good or bad. Comparisons work best when the same criteria are applied to every place.

Real-world factors still matter. Housing, employment, safety, legal status, healthcare, language, finances, and relationships cannot be replaced by a map interpretation.

Birth Time and Interpretation Limits

Astrocartography angles depend on birth time. An incorrect or estimated time can shift AS, DS, MC, and IC lines and reduce the reliability of precise location comparisons.

If you do not know your exact birth time:

  • Mark it as unknown when the form allows it.
  • Treat angle-specific results as provisional.
  • Avoid over-interpreting small distance differences.
  • Consider researching your recorded time before making major decisions from the map.

An IC line is also not automatically the best place to live. It indicates that private foundations may become more significant there; it does not say whether that experience will be easy, permanent, or suitable for your practical goals.

Displayed distances are geographic approximations between the selected location and calculated map lines. They help compare places but do not guarantee an event, feeling, or outcome.

Astrocartography is a symbolic interpretive system. It should not replace financial, legal, medical, housing, safety, or immigration advice.
